Step 1: Measure Each Room Correctly
The most common mistake homeowners make is measuring the room at just one point. Rooms are rarely perfectly square. For each room:
- Measure the longest length of the room (in feet), including any alcoves, closets, or bump-outs.
- Measure the widest width of the room, again including any extensions.
- Multiply:
Length × Width = Square Footage. For a 13.5 ft × 11 ft room:13.5 × 11 = 148.5 sq ft. - For L-shaped rooms, divide the room into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together.
Step 2: Add a Waste Factor
You will always need more flooring than your net room area due to cuts at walls, pattern matching, and inevitable damage during installation. The correct waste factor depends on the material and layout pattern:
| Flooring Type & Layout | Recommended Waste Factor | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood / LVP — straight | +5% | Minimal cuts, uniform planks |
| Hardwood / LVP — diagonal | +12–15% | More cuts at room perimeter |
| Laminate — straight | +7–10% | Stagger pattern requires extra pieces |
| Tile — straight grid | +10% | Edge cuts and grout layout |
| Tile — diagonal or herringbone | +15–20% | High cut waste at perimeter angles |
| Carpet | +5–10% | Seams and directional pile |
| Irregular / complex rooms | +15–20% | Multiple angles and obstacles |
Step 3: Calculate Total Material Needed
Multiply your room area by (1 + waste factor). For 148.5 sq ft with 10% waste: 148.5 × 1.10 = 163.4 sq ft — order at least 164 square feet.
Step 4: Convert to Flooring Packages
Most flooring is sold in cartons or boxes that cover a specific square footage. Divide your required area by the coverage per box and round up to whole boxes:
- LVP Carton (typical): 20–23 sq ft per box
- Laminate Carton (typical): 18–22 sq ft per box
- Hardwood Carton: 16–20 sq ft per box
For 164 sq ft needed with 20 sq ft per box: 164 ÷ 20 = 8.2 → buy 9 boxes.
Cost Estimate by Flooring Type (2024–2025 National Average)
| Flooring Type | Material Cost (per sq ft) | Installed Cost (per sq ft) | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carpet | $1–$5 | $3–$8 | 7–15 years |
| Vinyl Sheet | $0.80–$2.50 | $2–$5 | 10–20 years |
| Laminate | $2–$5 | $4–$9 | 15–25 years |
| Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) | $3–$7 | $5–$12 | 20–30 years |
| Engineered Hardwood | $4–$9 | $7–$14 | 25–35 years |
| Solid Hardwood (Oak) | $6–$14 | $10–$20 | 50–100 years |
| Ceramic Tile | $1–$6 | $5–$14 | 20–50 years |
| Porcelain Tile | $3–$12 | $8–$20 | 30–50+ years |
| Natural Stone (Marble) | $10–$30 | $20–$50 | 100+ years |
Don't Forget Underlayment and Transition Strips
Most floating floors (laminate and LVP) require an underlayment beneath them for cushioning, moisture protection, and sound dampening. Standard underlayment costs $0.20–$0.80 per sq ft. You'll also need transition strips ($8–$30 each) wherever the flooring meets a different surface at doorways or room borders.
