What is Ice and Water Shield?

Ice and water shield is a self-adhering waterproofing underlayment membrane. Unlike standard asphalt felt paper, it forms a watertight seal around roofing nails, preventing leaks caused by wind-driven rain and ice dams in cold climates.

Where is it Required?

The International Residential Code (IRC) mandates ice and water shield in regions where the average January temperature is 25°F or lower. It must be installed from the lowest edge of the roof to a point at least **24 inches inside the exterior wall line**. Additionally, it is highly recommended in all valleys, around chimneys, and along dormer walls.
