What is Roof Pitch?
Roof pitch represents the slope of a roof, expressed as the vertical rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For example, a "4:12 pitch" means the roof rises 4 inches vertically for every 12 inches it extends horizontally. Knowing this ratio allows us to calculate the actual sloped area without climbing onto the roof.
The Math of Pitch Multipliers
The pitch multiplier is derived using the Pythagorean theorem. Since a roof slope forms a right-angled triangle, the hypotenuse represents the sloped rafter length:
Multiplier = SquareRoot((Rise² + Run²) / Run²)
If the pitch is 6:12:
Multiplier = SquareRoot((6² + 12²) / 12²) = SquareRoot(180 / 144) = 1.118.
