10x10 Tile Calculator
Starting a flooring upgrade? A 10x10 room covers a surface area of 100 square feet. When purchasing materials like ceramic tile, engineered wood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), we suggest buying a total of 111 square feet to account for edge cuts and patterns waste.

How is this calculated?
Tile & Bedding Math:
Tile counts are determined by dividing the floor area by the single tile area. A 10% wastage allowance is automatically added for tile cutting. Bedding mortar lays underneath the tiles, which requires a wet mortar thickness of 25mm to 50mm.
Tile Count = (Floor Area / Tile Area) × 1.10 (Wastage Factor) Bedding Wet Volume = Floor Area × Bedding Thickness Bedding Dry Volume = Bedding Wet Volume × 1.33 Cement & Sand are split based on bedding mix ratio (e.g. 1:4)

About this 10x10 Flooring Calculation
This programmatic tile and wood estimator computes values for a 10' by 10' floor area. It factors in net square footage alongside standard waste ratios to suggest accurate ordering margins.
Example Calculation for 10' x 10' Floor
Here is the breakdown of material requirements for your 10x10 room:
- Net Room Area:
10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft - Standard 10% Waste Buffer:
100 sq ft × 0.10 = 10.0 sq ft - Total Ordering Square Footage:
100 + 10.0 = 111 sq ft - If using standard 12"x12" tiles: You will need exactly
111tiles.
Tips for Flooring Projects
- Check Subfloor Levelness: Any unevenness will cause tiles to crack or wooden planks to click. Sand high spots and fill low spots.
- Acclimate Hardwood: If installing solid or engineered wood, store the planks in the 10x10 room for 48-72 hours beforehand to adjust to local humidity.

Related FAQs
How much extra flooring should I order for waste?
Standard flooring installations require a 10% waste factor for straight lay, or 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns to cover cuts, mistakes, and board selection.
What is the difference between laminate and luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?
LVP is 100% waterproof and made of PVC, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. Laminate is made of wood byproducts, offering a more realistic wood feel but is susceptible to water damage.
10x10 Flooring FAQ
How many square feet is a 10x10 room?
A 10x10 room has a base area of exactly 100 square feet. If you are adding closets or small entry corridors, you should measure those individually and add them to this figure.
How much flooring should I buy for a 10x10 room?
You should buy a total of 111 square feet of flooring. The additional 10% covers structural edge cuts, corners, and any boards or tiles damaged during installation. If you choose a Herringbone pattern, increase the waste factor to 15%.
How much does LVP or tile cost for a 10x10 floor?
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) materials typically cost between $3 and $7 per sq ft, leading to a total budget of $333 to $777 for a 10x10 room. Ceramic tile runs from $4 to $12 per sq ft installed.
